Sens stun Sabres with shutout

THE Ottawa Senators shut out Buffalo 2-0 on Wednesday to snap the Sabres' four-game win streak.

Goalie Brian Elliot, making his 13th consecutive start in place of the injured Pascal Leclaire, made 22 saves to earn the shutout, while Alexandre Picard and Mike Fisher scored to give the Sens a much-needed lift.

Ottawa (17-12-4) learned earlier in the day they will be without Jason Spezza for the next six-eight weeks after the center injured his knee on Monday.

"All over the ice we were just buzzing around and they really didn't have anything in the first period," Elliott said.

"All the guys, especially defensively, we just kept everything to the outside. When all they have is shots from the boards, that makes it a lot easier on me."

The Senators are also without Chris Neil and Shean Donovan due to knee injuries, and are having to rely heavily on goaltender Elliot. The 24-year-old Canadian has had two shutouts in his last four games and three in just 41 career games.

On Wednesday, he was up against Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller, who leads the National Hockey League in goals against average. Miller finished with 26 saves but was beaten when Picard converted a snap shot at 18:23 of the first period.

Fisher followed up on a wrister with less than two minutes to go in the game for his 15th goal of the season as the Senators snapped a four-game winning streak for the Northeast-leading Sabres.

"Just because we're missing some key guys we don't want to try and step up and do too much, either. Just stick to our good team game," Fisher said. "Doesn't matter how we do it but we got the job done."

Ottawa, which also beat the Sabres 5-3 on November 21, is now four points behind Buffalo in the standings.

Elsewhere, it was: Devils 2, Canadiens 1; Blackhawks 3, Blues 0; Islanders 2, Rangers 1; Hurricanes 5, Stars 3; Panthers 4, Thrashers 3; Coyotes 6, Maple Leafs 3; and Ducks 3, Canucks 2.

In Newark, New Jersey, Martin Brodeur tied Patrick Roy's NHL record for the most regular-season appearances by a goalie and the Devils marked the occasion with a 2-1 win over Montreal.

Patrik Elias scored the winner with 2:36 left, moving the Devils level on points with Pittsburgh atop the Atlantic Division, with two games in hand.

Brodeur played his 1,029th game, all with New Jersey in his 16-year career. Roy played for Montreal and Colorado in his 18-year career.

Illka Pikkarainen also scored to help the Devils beat Montreal for the fifth straight time. Travis Moen scored for the Canadiens.

In Chicago, Cristobal Huet made 27 saves for his second shutout of the season, helping Chicago defeat St Louis.

Patrick Kane assisted on all three Chicago goals, setting up Troy Brouwer, Brian Campbell and Marian Hossa. The Blackhawks have not allowed a goal over two games and a span of 141 minutes.
