Sharks edge Avs to extend run
THE San Jose Sharks left it late against Colorado on Tuesday but earned their seventh win in a row with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Avalanche.
Trailing 0-1 after Erik Johnson's goal early in the third period, the Sharks (37-21-6) tied the game through Joe Thornton with less than three minutes remaining.
"It was just patience, we thought if we could keep getting pucks to nets eventually things would go in for us," Thornton told reporters.
"Even though we might be losing we feel like at any moment we can break through."
In other National Hockey League games on Tuesday, it was: Capitals 2, Islanders 1 (in overtime); Oilers 2, Predators 1 (in a shootout); Canucks 2, Blue Jackets 1 (in SO); Sabres 3, Rangers 2; Hurricanes 2, Panthers 1; Canadiens 3, Thrashers 1; Bruins 1, Senators 0; Flames 6, Blues 0; and Stars 3, Coyotes 2.
In San Jose, California, after a scoreless overtime period, Ryan Clowe netted the only goal in the shootout to maintain the Sharks' hot streak.
It was the second consecutive game that Clowe scored the deciding goal in a shootout, after also pulling off the feat in Friday's win over Calgary.
The Sharks' latest triumph extended their Pacific Division-lead to four points over the Phoenix Coyotes.
San Jose goaltender Antti Niemi made 18 saves and stared down three shots during the shootout on a day when the Sharks signed him to a four-year extension worth US$15.2 million.
"It's the first time (I) have something for the longer term and it's great," the 27-year-old Finn said. "It shouldn't change anything and we'll keep doing what we're doing."
The Avalanche (26-30-8), losers of 14 of their last 15 games, have not won in San Jose since 2008.
They appeared poised to change that until San Jose broke through late in the third. Colorado goaltender Brian Elliott made 34 saves in his third game since the team acquired him in a trade with Ottawa.
Snatched victory
In Washington, Alex Ovechkin scored 1:55 into overtime after Brooks Laich leveled the game with a minute left in regulation as the Capitals snatched victory from the New York Islanders.
Ovechkin picked up a loose puck near the boards and made a mad dash down the beating goalkeeper Nathan Lawson with a backhand shot.
Lawson made 40 saves and kept the Capitals at bay until Laich scored with 47.2 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Laich redirected a pass from recently acquired Jason Arnott into the net.
Washington improved to 11-3-0 in its last 14 games against the Islanders, who have lost four straight overall.
In Edmonton, Linus Omark and Jordan Eberle scored in a shootout for the home team's win.
Jim Vandermeer scored in the first period to tie it less than a minute after Blake Geoffrion made it 1-0 with his first career NHL goal.
Martin Gerber stopped 34 shots - 18 in the first period alone - for the Oilers, who have won five of eight.
Geoffrion is the first fourth-generation player in the NHL.
Great-grandfather Howie Morenz, grandfather Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion - both Hall of Famers - and father Dan Geoffrion all played in the league, too.
Gerber also stopped two shots in the shootout.
