Sharks rally for win as Kings squander big lead
THE Los Angeles Kings blew a four-goal lead and lost 5-6 in overtime to the San Jose Sharks in the first round of the NHL playoffs on Tuesday, while Chicago routed Vancouver 7-2 to keep its series alive.
The Blackhawks showed they would not surrender their Stanley Cup crown without a fight, pounding the Canucks to avoid being swept in the best-of-seven series, which switches back to Vancouver for Game 5 tonight.
With the score tied at 1-1 after the first period, Chicago's offense exploded with four goals in the second to stun the Canucks, who had dominated the opening three games of the Western Conference series.
While the Blackhawks lost top defenseman Brent Seabrook due to injury, center Dave Bolland returned after sitting out 17 games with a concussion and celebrated with a goal and three assists to the delight of the capacity crowd.
"I didn't think I was going to have this kind of night but it turned out nice," Bolland said.
Chicago's Patrick Sharp scored a pair of power-play goals in an ill-tempered third period. Vancouver goaltender Roberto Luongo was pulled after surrendering six goals on 28 shots.
In Los Angeles, San Jose trailed 0-4 early in the second period but staged a furious fightback to enter the third tied with the Kings at 5-5.
"We only have ourselves to blame," Los Angeles winger Dustin Brown told reporters. "We have Game 4 on Thursday, and we definitely have to look at what happened in the second (period)."
Devin Setoguchi scored 3:09 in overtime to cap San Jose's rally at a devastated Staples Center and hand the Sharks a 2-1 lead in the series. Game 4 is also in Los Angeles.
San Jose's Ryane Clowe scored twice in the second period and teammate Joe Pavelski tied the game at 5-5 with 30 seconds left in the period.
