Sturm's OT goal gives Bruins 2-1 win
THE Boston Bruins pulled off a thrilling comeback at baseball's Fenway Park by beating the visiting Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 on Marco Sturm's overtime goal in the NHL's Winter Classic yesterday.
Mark Recchi, a former Flyer, tied the game with 2:18 left in the third period, ending goalie Michael Leighton's shutout streak of more than 150 minutes. Then Sturm connected 1:57 into overtime on a pass from Patrice Bergeron.
Until the rally in the NHL's third annual outdoor game, the only goal was Danny Syvret's first of his career in the second period.
Sabres 4, Thrashers 3, OT
At Buffalo, New York, a crazy bounce off the glass allowed Derek Roy to score into an unattended net 4:02 into overtime, as Buffalo overcame a three-goal deficit for the second straight outing to beat Atlanta.
Jochen Hecht had two goals and an assist, Tim Connolly had a goal and assist, and Ryan Miller stopped 32 shots on the day he was selected to the US Olympic team.
Buffalo was coming off a 4-3 win over Pittsburgh on Tuesday in which it also erased a 3-0 deficit. The Sabres became the first team to win consecutive games when trailing by three or more goals since Dallas did it in January 2006.
Ilya Kovalchuk, Bryan Little and Evander Kane scored for the Thrashers, winless in their past seven games.
