Tricky Tavares powers Islanders over Stars

Captain John Tavares scored a hat trick and added two assists to help propel the New York Islanders to a 7-3 victory over the Dallas Stars in the NHL on Monday.
In other games, Sergei Bobrovsky returned from injury to lead the Columbus Blue Jackets past the New York Rangers 4-3 in a shootout, the Calgary Flames broke out of an offensive slump to top the Colorado Avalanche 4-3, and the Montreal Canadiens earned a 2-1 win over the Florida Panthers.
The Islanders, the last-place team in the Metropolitan Division, trailed 2-0 when highly touted rookie center Ryan Strome scored the first goal of his NHL career early in the second period, sparking a six-goal barrage over a 24:38 span.
Peter Regin, Brock Nelson, and Brian Strait also scored for New York.
Dallas built its lead on first-period goals by Jamie Benn and Erik Cole, but Kari Lehtonen couldn’t make the margin stick, giving up seven goals on 43 shots.
Also in New York, Bobrovsky made 40 saves through overtime and two more in the shootout in his first action in over a month to lead Columbus past his former team.
Bobrovsky stopped Mats Zuccarello and Rick Nash in the tiebreaker, and Mark Letestu and Ryan Johansen scored against Henrik Lundqvist to win it.
Bobrovsky, the reigning Vezina Trophy winner, had missed 14 games because of a strained groin.
Calgary, meanwhile, came into its game in Denver having been shut out in three of its last four games.
The Flames’ only goal since December 23 came in a 4-1 loss to Philadelphia.
Jiri Hudler and Joe Colborne had a goal and assist each, and Mike Cammalleri scored a power-play goal in the third period to lift the Flames.
Montreal’s Brian Gionta scored the winner in the second period and Carey Price stopped 26 shots to lead the Canadiens.
