US eases into worlds semis
THE United States clinched a spot in the world championships semifinals by beating Switzerland 3-1 in the eastern Czech city of Ostrava yesterday.
Switzerland took the lead on 14 minutes when Nashville defenseman Roman Josi grabbed the puck in the Swiss defending zone and cut through the stunned US defense to beat Connor Hellebuyck in goal.
But the Americans came back within a minute midway through the game as San Jose forward Ben Smith fired in a pass from Jimmy Vesey and Minnesota forward Charlie Coyle tipped in a slap shot by Seth Jones.
Toronto defenseman Jake Gardiner made it 3-1 on 51 minutes, beating Reto Berra in the Swiss goal with a deflected wrist shot from the blue line.
In the other quarterfinals, Canada was facing Belarus, defending champion Russia taking on Sweden and the Czechs playing against Finland.
Meanwhile, the New York Rangers earned a place in the NHL Eastern Conference finals when Derek Stepan scored in overtime to secure a 2-1 win over the Washington Capitals on Wednesday and a third successive victory to snatch the series 4-3.
Stepan’s wrist shot from the left wing after he won a faceoff capped the comeback both on the night and in the series. The Rangers are the only team to win a series after trailing 1-3 in successive years, having done the same thing to Pittsburgh in the second round in 2014.
New York, which had the NHL’s best record this season, will face Tampa Bay for a spot in the Stanley Cup finals, where the Rangers lost to Los Angeles last spring.
