Wilson nets first career goal as Blue Jackets edge Flyers

THE Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 on Monday for their fourth win in five games.

Mathieu Garon, whose shutout bid ended with 5:01 remaining, made 28 saves for the Blue Jackets (5-3-0), who recorded just their second home win of the season.

"We wanted to back up the good game we played in Chicago with another one," Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel told reporters in reference to their victory over the Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks on Saturday. "It's a big step for this young team."

Kyle Wilson opened the scoring in the first period with his first career NHL goal while Derick Brassard doubled the lead on a second-period power play.

The Flyers (3-4-1) made a strong push in the third period, where they outshot the Blue Jackets 12-4, and were rewarded when Ville Leino made a tip-in with just over five minutes remaining.

Brian Boucher, who made 23 saves, was pulled for an extra attacker with 95 seconds left but the Flyers could not tie the game and fell to their fourth loss in five games.

"It's completely frustrating," said Flyers coach Peter Laviolette. "We got exactly what we deserved tonight."

In St Paul, Minnesota, the Los Angeles Kings got their power-play issues sorted out. Then they got around to winning the game, too.

Michal Handzus scored in the fifth round of a shootout to give the Los Angeles Kings a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Wild.

Anze Kopitar and Jarret Stoll scored with the extra man after Minnesota took an early two-goal lead. The two also scored in the shootout and Kings goalie Jonathan Quick stopped Antti Miettinen's shot in the fifth round to secure the victory.

Los Angeles won for the fifth time in six games and Quick stopped 20 shots.

"The start wasn't the best there," Kopitar said. "But it doesn't matter, two points are two points at the end of the day. Too bad it came in a shootout and not in regulation, but whatever it is, we'll take the two points."

John Madden and Nick Schultz scored for the Wild. Niklas Backstrom made 32 saves for Minnesota.

In Montreal, each member of the Montreal Canadiens' top line scored, Carey Price made the key saves, and the Phoenix Coyotes were once again denied a win at the Bell Centre.

Andrei Kostitsyn scored 1:25 into overtime after linemates Tomas Plekanec and Michael Cammalleri scored in regulation to give Montreal a 3-2 win over Phoenix.

Kostitsyn, who assisted on Plekanec's goal in the second, put a rebound past Ilya Bryzgalov for his third goal in two games as the Canadiens improved to 5-2-1. Cammalleri also had a goal and an assist.

"All three guys, I think, are in top shape and we feel good with each other," Kostitsyn said.

The line has combined to score 11 of Montreal's 20 goals.
