Wings apply pressure in the third to stop Devils
THE injury-plagued Detroit Red Wings are heading into the All-Star break on a winning note - thanks to two of the best offensive players they have left.
Valtteri Filppula scored 5:32 into the third period to put Detroit ahead to stay while Johan Franzen added a goal in the final minute of a 3-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday night in Detroit.
Jimmy Howard made 23 saves and Darren Helm added a goal for the Red Wings, whose injured list these days is headlined by Pavel Datsyuk, Mike Modano and Tomas Holmstrom.
"Obviously, we're going to be a better team after the break with getting our guys back," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "We're better this year. Last year we didn't have the depth that we do this year."
Detroit snapped New Jersey's four-game winning streak and dealt the Devils their first loss in regulation in eight games. The Red Wings are in second place in the Western Conference.
Brian Rolston scored for New Jersey and Martin Brodeur made 26 saves.
Filppula's goal snapped a 1-1 tie. New Jersey had a goal disallowed with 2:28 remaining when officials ruled Howard was pushed into the net by an attacking player.
Franzen scored his 21st goal of the season with 43.6 seconds to play after the Devils were unable to pull Brodeur for an extra skater.
In other games, it was: Kings 3, Sharks 2; Thrashers 1, Capitals 0; Canucks 2, Predators 1; Bruins 2, Panthers 1; Hurricanes 4, Islanders 2; Stars 3, Oilers 1; Coyotes 5, Avalanche 2; and Flames 4, Blues 1.
In Los Angeles, Jarret Stoll scored the only shootout goal in the fourth round as Los Angeles headed into the NHL All-Star break with its third straight victory, 3-2 over the San Jose Sharks.
Jonathan Quick made 22 saves, plus four shots in the shootout.
