Wings douse Flames ahead of holiday festivities
THE Detroit Red Wings kicked off what Motor City sports fans hope will be a happy Thanksgiving holiday by powering to a 5-3 win over the Calgary Flames on Wednesday.
Pavel Datsyuk and Valtteri Filppula scored 74 seconds apart in the third period to seal a third consecutive win for the home team, while Tomas Holmstrom contributed a pair of powerplay tallies.
Also helping to get the holiday off to a winning start was Ian White, who returned from injury to chip in with another of Detroit's goals.
Many of the Red Wings said they planned to spend Thursday's Thanksgiving watching the Detroit Lions host the unbeaten Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers in the NFL before getting on a plane to Boston for a meeting with the Bruins.
Having muscled in on college football's big day with the New Year's Winter Classic outdoor game, the NHL will try to cut into another US tradition by staging a nationally televised matinee between the Wings and Bruins on 'Black Friday' when Americans storm the malls in search of pre-Christmas deals.
"We'll celebrate, we'll watch football and have a big meal before fly out," Red Wings Swedish captain Nicklas Lidstrom told reporters.
"Tonight, I thought we stuck with it for 60 minutes. They are a team battling for points as hard as we are but I think our powerplay was the difference tonight."
Holmstrom scored the only goal of the first period, the big Swede parking himself in front of Calgary net during a powerplay and redirecting Lidstrom's blast from the point past Miikka Kiprusoff.
"That's something we work on in practise almost every day, taking a lot of shots from the blueline," Lidstrom said. "He (Holmstrom) is one of the best at it. Even if he doesn't score, he is always there. He's always a threat in front of the net."
Just 44 seconds into the second, Jarome Iginla pulled Calgary level before Brendan Morrison followed with his first of the season to nudge the Flames in front.
