Back-up Medical Plans Ensure Race
BACK-UP medical plans ensured that the Chinese Grand Prix went ahead despite the cloud cover as the FIA agreed to the alternative emergency arrangements.
The low-lying clouds over the Shanghai International Circuit on Friday sparked FIA fears as the medical helicopter could not operate, meaning it could not land at Huashan Hospital.
The hospital, 38km from the circuit, was the only one nearby with neurosurgery facilities. It can hardly be reached by road within 20 minutes — a preferred transfer time for seriously injured patients. F1’s new bosses even considered moving the race to Saturday when the forecast suggested better weather.
As an alternative plan, the FIA Medical Delegate reviewed facilities at Ruijin Hospital’s branch in Jiading District, which is some 5km from the circuit, and can be reached by car in 10 minutes. Special arrangements were made for a complete neurosurgery team from Huashan Hospital to be present at Ruijin yesterday.
FIA’s inspection on Saturday afternoon revealed that Ruijin Hospital would not only be easily accessible in all weather conditions, but would also be able to provide the required care.
