Bernie gives his blessings to youth karting league in Asia
FORMULA One boss Bernie Ecclestone and the Formula One Management (FOM) are backing a youth karting project in Asia — Formula Kart Starts — to help spot young talent and promote motor sports in Asia.
It will have a league of its own — FKS Asia — initially in China before going international.
Shanghai Jiuxin Event, the Asian promoter of FKS, said selection of young kart drivers will be held across the country and 50 drivers will be picked to take part in a 12-round national tour in six cities and regions around the country next year.
By 2018, the first FKS Asian Tour will be held involving drivers from China and other Asian countries. The league will have stops in countries where F1 Grands Prix are held, namely Japan, Malaysia and Singapore.
“FKS is already well promoted in Europe, and we want to expand it to Asia,” FKS director Carolynn Hoy said at FKS Asia’s launch ceremony in Shanghai yesterday.
Jiuxin Event has reached agreements with some karting clubs around the country. Young drivers will be trained and competing on standard circuits and provided with cars and professional technical support with “an affordable budget.”
Interestingly, part of the project involves imparting skills to young drivers on how to communicate with the media and manage time to keep a balance between career and life if they decide to turn professional in the future.
FKS was established in Europe in 1995 with three-time world champion Lewis Hamilton and woman driver Susie Wolff some of the best-known names to emerge from the project.
