Briatore asks court to overturn ban from F1

Former Renault team principal Flavio Briatore asked a Paris court yesterday to overturn his ban from Formula One.

A Paris-based spokeswoman for Briatore said his lawyers presented their motion to the court, which fixed a date of Nov. 24 for the first hearing. The spokeswoman was not authorized to be named according to her public relations agency's policies.

Briatore wants the court to annul last month's decision by the World Motor Sport Council, the spokeswoman said.

The body indefinitely banned Briatore for arranging for driver Nelson Piquet Jr. to deliberately crash at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix to help his teammate Fernando Alonso win the race.

Briatore said Sunday the ban "is a legal absurdity" and that he is confident French courts will overturn it.

Governing body FIA and the Renault team declined to comment Monday on Briatore's court motion.

Renault chief engineer Pat Symonds was suspended for five years over the crash scandal. Two-time world champion Alonso is leaving to join Ferrari next season.
