China's Ma named reserve driver with Caterham

CHINA'S Ma Qinghua will be a Caterham reserve driver this season along with American Alexander Rossi, the Formula One team said yesterday.

Shanghai-born Ma, who was a development driver with now-defunct Spanish outfit HRT last year, will attend all the GPs and also compete for Caterham Racing in the GP2 support series.

He will also take part in the first free practice session at next month's Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai.

Ma, who is 25 years old, featured in four F1 practice sessions last year, becoming the first Chinese-born driver to take part in a grand prix weekend.

"I'm very pleased to welcome Ma into our team. Alexander continues his development with us into 2013 and his promotion is a reflection of the investment we are making in him for the future," said team principal Cyril Abiteboul in a statement.

Ma will drive in the Chinese Grand Prix FP1 session as part of the Reserve Driver program. In addition, he will be racing throughout the forthcoming season with Caterham Racing in the GP2 Series.

"I know the fans at home will be really excited to see me race in GP2 and with the F1 work I also have ahead of me. China can be proud that it continues to have a driver involved in motor racing at the very highest level." Ma said on the team's website.

Caterham's race drivers for this season are Frenchman Charles Pic and Dutch rookie Giedo van der Garde.

Caterham didn't score a point last season. It is owned by Malaysian airline tycoon Tony Fernandes, the majority shareholder of English football club Queens Park Rangers.
