City braces for endurance race

The 2013 FIA World Endurance Championship, the 6 Hours of Shanghai is being staged at the Shanghai Audi International Circuit over the weekend.

A total of 28 cars across four classes, including Audi R18 e-tron quattro and Toyota TS030 hybrid Le Mans Prototypes, are in action. Other participants include factory entries from Aston Martin, Porsche and Ferrari.

Toyota Racing of Japan won the pole for the LMP1 (Le Mans Prototype 1) yesterday while the pole for LMP2 (Le Mans Prototype 2) went to G-Drive Racing of Russia. The other two classes are the Le Mans Grand Touring Endurance Professional and Amateur. For each team, two drivers set two timed laps each, and the qualifying results are determined based on an average of the four total laps.

The main race starts at 11am today. The three-day event is the seventh, and second from last, leg of the eight-race 2013 WEC season. Now in its second year, the championship is co-organized by FIA and ACO. Four titles will be awarded to drivers in the 2013 season that ends in Bahrain on November 30 — a World Championship for LMP1 and LMP2 drivers; a World Cup for drivers in the LMGTE categories; and two FIA Endurance Trophies for drivers in the LMP2 and LMGTE Am categories.

Participants at the Shanghai event include former Formula One drivers like Giancarlo Fisichella and Kazuki Nakajima.

The only Chinese driver, David Cheng, will race for French team OAK Racing in LMP2, partnering French Jacques Nicolet and Keiko Ihara of Japan.
