De la Rosa's Ferrari spouts smoke

FERRARI'S new test pilot, Pedro de la Rosa, was forced to abandon his car during Formula One testing when the Italian team's new vehicle began to spout smoke.

De la Rosa was only on his second lap behind the wheel of the new F138 when he stopped on the Jerez track yesterday.

This was De la Rosa's first time behind the wheel of the Ferrari after driver Felipe Massa practiced on Thursday. Fernando Alonso, did not attend the Jerez tests.

Yesterday was the fourth and final day of testing in southern Spain. There are two more tests in Barcelona before the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on March 17.

Massa clocked the fastest time of the opening preseason test in his new F138 car on Thursday, giving the Italian team hope it may have overcome the lack of speed that spoiled its title chase last year.

Mercedes, meanwhile, rebounded from an incident-packed opening two days with Nico Rosberg completing a session-high 148 laps at the Jerez circuit. Rosberg's car had also spouted flames on Tuesday, and the next day new teammate Lewis Hamilton crashed his vehicle into a barrier.
