FIA curfew on team personnel

FORMULA One's governing body will introduce a curfew on team personnel next season to cut down the amount of extra hours.

Following a meeting of its World Motor Sport Council in Monaco last week, the FIA announced on Monday that team personnel will be banned from grand prix circuits for two periods of six hours, from midnight to 6am when practice starts at 10am on Friday, and from 1am to 7am when practice begins at 11am on Saturday.

"No team personnel who are associated in any way with the operation of the cars are permitted within the confines of the circuit during two six hour periods which commence ten hours before the scheduled start times of P1 and P3," FIA said.

Each team will, however, be permitted four exceptions to the rule during the season. The FIA will also impose tougher driving standards in order to have cleaner races next season.

"Maneuvers liable to hinder other drivers, such as more than one change of direction to defend a position, deliberate crowding of a car beyond the edge of the track or any other abnormal change of direction, are not permitted," FIA said. "Drivers must use the track at all times. For the avoidance of doubt the white lines defining the track edges are considered to be part of the track but the curbs are not."

The FIA added that drivers will be asked to allow their faster rivals to overtake them "at the first available opportunity" and will face sanctions from race stewards if they fail to adhere to the rule. Stewards will also be given increased powers and will have the right to exclude drivers involved in incidents from the race classification or suspend them from the next event.
