FIA warns teams not to miss races

NEW Formula One teams US F1 and Campos will breach regulations if they are not ready in time for the season-opening race in Bahrain on March 14, the International Automobile Federation said on Wednesday.

With the newcomers yet to complete their driver lineups or test, FIA President Jean Todt had been quoted as saying the Concorde Agreement, which governs the sport, allowed teams to miss three races.

However, an FIA spokesman said Todt had been misquoted and "after careful legal analysis of the details, the FIA's definitive statement on the matter was published today".

The statement did not specify whether sanctions would follow if a team missed a race.

"From a sporting and regulatory point of view, each team that has registered for the championship is obliged to take part in every event of the season," the statement read.

"Any failure to take part, even for just one championship event, would constitute an infringement both of the Concorde Agreement and the FIA regulations."
