Lewis fears penalties will wreck season
LEWIS Hamilton fears his world championship defence is in danger of being undermined by engine failures and grid penalties as he seeks to cut Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg’s 24-points lead.
The three-time champion went into opening free practice yesterday for this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix taking parts of his fifth new power unit this year, leaving him facing certain to use further new parts, for which he will be penalized, in the second half of the season.
“I’m starting with my last engine this weekend,” Hamilton said. “And so, I will have at least one race where I start dead last, most likely two, with two more new engines I have to take, the sixth and seventh.
“The worst thing is that I’m the only Mercedes driver to have that.
“For sure, it’s difficult for us as a team and it’s difficult considering that we are the Mercedes team.”
Rosberg meanwhile clocked a best lap in one minute and 7.967 seconds. Nico Hulkenberg was third fastest for Force India, six-tenths of a second behind the two Mercedes men, ahead of Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari.
Australian Daniel Ricciardo was fifth fastest for Red Bull.
