Lorenzo claims Silverstone win
MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo held off fellow Spaniard Marc Marquez in a dramatic tussle to win the British Grand Prix at Silverstone yesterday.
World championship leader Marquez, who dislocated his shoulder in the morning’s warm-up session, started on pole on his Honda but Yamaha’s Lorenzo made an early move to overtake him.
Marquez, bidding for his fifth win in a row, fought back to regain the lead on the last lap before Lorenzo nipped past him again to seal victory on the line by less than a tenth of a second.
Honda’s Dani Pedrosa was third to complete a Spanish sweep of the podium.
Marquez, who hurt his shoulder in the morning warm-up and had to be taken by ambulance to the circuit’s medical center, maintained his lead at the top of the overall standings.
Marquez, 20, leads Pedrosa by 30 points, with Lorenzo a further nine points adrift with six races left in the 18-race season. Fourth-placed Italian Valentino Rossi, a seven-time world champion, is a distant 77 points off the leader having also finished fourth yesterday.
Earlier, Britain’s Scott Redding maintained his grip on the Moto2 championship leaderboard with victory.
The Kalex rider beat Japan’s Takaaki Nakagami, also on a Kalex, into second with Thomas Luthi of Switzerland on a Suterin third.
Redding leads Spaniard Pol Espargaro by 38 points.
