Red Bull flex muscles as Webber tops China times
RED Bull finally showed their hand at the Chinese Grand Prix today when Mark Webber set the quickest time in the final practice session ahead of qualifying.
The Australian clocked a best lap of one minute 35.323 seconds to knock McLaren's Lewis Hamilton off the top of the time sheets after the British former world champion set the early pace.
Hamilton's best was 0.241 seconds slower than Webber, who took pole for the last race in Malaysia, but it kept him ahead of Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull with the second McLaren of world champion Jenson Button rounding out the top four.
Webber and Vettel will be aiming to give their team a fourth pole in four races in qualifying later today as they target back-to-back wins after the German led a Red Bull one-two in Sepang.
Spain's Fernando Alonso was fifth quickest for Ferrari ahead of Mercedes duo Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher on a sunny but blustery morning in Shanghai.
The session was red-flagged 17 minutes from the end when Vitaly Petrov ran wide at a turn and lost control of his Renault, ploughing across grass and gravel before smashing nose first into a tyre wall.
The Russian was unhurt but the front end of his car will need major reconstruction if he is to get back out in it for qualifying.
Hispania (HRT) driver Karun Chandhok has been penalized five places on the grid after the seal on his gearbox was broken without the presence of officials.
The penalty is unlikely to affect the Indian's start to tomorrow's race too much as his best qualifying position in three races this year was 22nd on the 24-car grid in Malaysia.
