Renault still not counting on Kubica in early 2012
RENAULT said on Thursday it is standing by its statement that Robert Kubica will miss at least the early part of the 2012 Formula One season despite reports that the driver's manager allegedly accused the team of changing Kubica's words.
Renault said that Kubica's manager, Daniel Morelli, approved the statement that was released to the media on Wednesday, which said the driver called the team to say that he could not commit to driving in the 2012 season.
Reports in Brazil said Morelli told the Italian Gazetta dello Sport daily that Renault changed Kubica's words and that it wasn't true that the driver won't be able to race early in 2012 because of the injuries sustained in a rally earlier this year.
Morelli allegedly said that he was upset with Renault announcing that Kubica was out, and that now the driver may even leave the team. He reportedly said Kubica only suggested that he wasn't certain he would be fit for preseason F1 testing in February.
However, Renault said it was puzzled by the reports that Morelli was backtracking from the statement.
"We don't know why he said it because the press release was approved by him," the team said. "We found it a little bit strange ... Our press release stands as before."
Renault said in Wednesday's statement that it had been hoping Kubica would be fit to resume his role as the team's No. 1 driver from the start of 2012, but the 26-year-old Pole would not recover in time from the life-threatening injuries he sustained in February.
