Schumi fans hold birthday tribute outside hospital

The family of Michael Schumacher described the Formula One legend as a fighter who “will not give up” as fans converged yesterday on a hospital in the French Alps to honor the Formula One great on his 45th birthday, days after he was critically injured in a skiing accident

“Following Michael’s skiing accident, we would like to thank the people from all around the world who have expressed their sympathy and sent their best wishes for his recovery,” the Schumacher family said in a statement posted on the German racing great’s website.

“We all know he is a fighter and will not give up” they added.

Doctors and family members had been tight-lipped about the condition of the retired Formula One champion, who has been hospitalized since Sunday, when he slammed his head against a rock while skiing in the French Alps.

Schumacher has had two operations to remove bleeding and pressure on his brain. He has been in a medically induced coma since being hospitalized.

Busloads of fans from Italy and Paris headed to the hospital in Grenoble where he is being treated.

Gulio Carissimo drove for four hours yesterday morning to reach Grenoble. Wearing a Formula One Ferrari jacket and hat, he said he felt compelled to come.

“With all the joy he has given us with his victories, we had to be there,” he said.

Doctors treating the seven-time F1 champion him are keeping him sedated and his body at an artificially low temperature to help healing.

Ferrari also put out a special message on its website, saying “Forza Michael,” or “Go Michael” in Italian.
