USF1 will not compete this season
USF1 will not be racing in Formula One this year, with the American team hopeful of holding its spot for 2011.
USF1 had previously said it was looking to skip the first four races of the season.
Team boss Ken Anderson says it is now "waiting for a reply from (governing body) FIA" about debuting next year, according to Autosport.com. "In the meantime, there is nothing for the employees to do, so we have told them to stop working on the current car until we have a decision."
Serbian team Stefan GP is hopeful of taking USF1's place as it waits in the wings with the cars from the defunct Toyota team.
The governing body, who sent F1 race director Charlie Whiting on a fact-finding visit to the team factory last week, is expected to announce a final entry list in the next day or two for the season starting in Bahrain next week.
USF1, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, is one of four new teams handed a slot on the starting grid for 2010 after checks by the governing body. But USF1 has struggled to raise money and is in no position to race.
They had announced in January that Argentina's Jose Maria Lopez would drive for them in a deal backed by that country's government.
The Serbian-backed Stefan GP team, which has taken over the cars designed by Toyota before the Japanese manufacturer pulled out at the end of last year, has been lobbying hard to take USF1's place.
"SGP would like to re-confirm its desire and... its ability to compete in the whole of the FIA 2010 Formula One World Championship," the team said on its Website (www.stefangp.com) at the weekend.
"It recognizes that this can only happen with the consent of the FIA and the FOM (commercial rights holder), but has faith that the Formula One 'family' will make the correct decision in the end."
Meanwhile, new Formula One team Campos Meta renamed itself Hispania Racing Team yesterday.
The Spanish team, which will be also known by the initials HRT-F1, changed names following businessman Jose Ramon Carabante's acquisition of Adrian Campos' team last week.
The team will unveil its drivers today with Bruno Senna, nephew of three-time champion Ayrton Senna, already confirmed. Indian driver Karun Chandhok is expected to partner the Brazilian, while Argentina's Jose Maria Lopez was expected to sign as a reserve driver since USF1 will not reach the grid at Bahrain on March 14.
