Viso expected to resume driving after Indy crash

VENEZUELA'S E J Viso was released from an Indianapolis hospital late on Tuesday night after crashing during Indianapolis 500 practice.

The 25-year-old driver spun as he went through the first turn, then slid up the track and slammed into the outside wall. Viso was taken off the track on a stretcher, examined at the infield medical center and then transported to Methodist Hospital after complaining of back pain.

KV Racing Technology, Viso's team, issued a statement saying X-rays, MRI scans and a series of test showed no extensive damage. Viso was released about 5 hours after the crash and the team said he hopes to be driving his backup car when practice resumes again.

Viso wasn't the only KV Racing driver to have a tough day.

Brazil's Mario Moraes damaged the rear wing and the gear box on his car when he spun coming out of the pits. He slid through the grass and backed into the inside wall before driving the car back to the pits. Moraes was not hurt.

Rain has interrupted each of the first four practice days on the 4-kilometer oval and it postponed the start of Tuesday's session by a little more than an hour. Practice also was stopped briefly several times throughout the rest of the afternoon when it appeared rain was moving in.

The cool, damp weather has wreaked havoc on team plans, especially after race organizers trimmed the traditional three-week schedule to two weeks and the traditional four qualifying days to two.

Practice is scheduled to continue through Friday with qualifying for the May 30 race scheduled for the weekend.
