Webber sets early pace in Singapore
FORMULA One championship leader Mark Webber of Red Bull set the fastest lap in yesterday's opening practice for the Singapore Grand Prix.
Webber recorded a time of 1 minute, 54.589 seconds around a drying Marina Bay circuit to outpace Mercedes' Michael Schumacher and Force India's Adrian Sutil.
Most of the session was run on intermediate tires due to damp patches left on the track by afternoon rain, with drivers only trying slicks in the final 20 minutes, when all of the fastest times were set. Webber completed his fastest lap after the checkered flag.
Webber's Red Bull teammate Sebastien Vettel was fourth fastest.
Of the other championship contenders, the McLarens of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton were sixth and 18th respectively, while the Ferraris of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa finished 11th and 19th.
While limited track time on slick tires meant true pace was hard to read, the relatively strong showing by the Red Bulls will be a boost to a team which feared its championship rivals had been able to develop their cars to match it on high downforce circuits.
Red Bull won both the Monaco and Hungary races on the two tracks most similar in characteristics to Singapore.
Sauber's Nick Heidfeld put in a strong performance, setting the 13th fastest time -- only one behind his teammate Kamui Kobayashi -- in his return to F1, having replaced Pedro de la Rosa.
Also, Hispania announced Christian Klien would drive this weekend for Sakon Yamamoto, who is ill.
