Aoyama in for ailing Pedrosa at Dutch GP
DANI Pedrosa will not be fit in time to race in the MotoGP at the Dutch Grand Prix in Assen this weekend and will be replaced by Japan's Hiroshi Aoyama, his Repsol Honda team said yesterday.
The 25-year-old Spaniard broke his collarbone in a fall at the French Grand Prix at Le Mans last month and needed further surgery last week after a fragment of bone came loose.
Earlier in the week, Pedrosa had said it was more likely he would be back for the Italian Grand Prix at the start of next month.
Pedrosa, last season's runner-up, missed his home race in Barcelona and the British Grand Prix and has dropped down to fifth in the championship standings on 61 points after six races.
Teammate Casey Stoner of Australia leads the standings on 116 points, 18 ahead of Italy's champion Jorge Lorenzo of Yamaha. Aoyama, who is seventh with 43 points, moves across from the Gresini Honda team.
Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya, meanwhile, will host MotoGP for at least another five years after the promoter Dorna yesterday announced a contract extension until 2016.
The circuit has been a fixture on the calendar since 1992, with a total of 146,718 spectators attending the three days of this year's race earlier this month.
"It is a pleasure to approve an agreement that allows an annual race that generates an economic impact of 30 million euros (US$43.18 million) for the entire area surrounding the circuit," said circuit general director Salvador Servia in a statement.
