Lorenzo savors British GP win

JORGE Lorenzo of Spain won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone yesterday to extend his lead at the top of the MotoGP world championship standings.
Lorenzo started in pole position for the 10th time in the MotoGP class and dominated the race to finish in 41 minutes, 34.083 seconds on a Yamaha. Italy's Andrea Dovizioso came in 6.743 seconds behind on a Honda, followed by Ben Spies of the United States on a Yamaha.
Lorenzo now has 115 points in the overall standings. Dovizioso moves up to second on 78 and Dani Pedrosa is third on 73.
Nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi did not compete, having broken his leg before the Italian Grand Prix earlier this month, and is now fourth in the standings on 61 points.
Jules Cluzel of France took his first ever grand prix victory in the 250cc. Thomas Luthi of Switzerland was second and Julian Simon of Spain came third.
Lorenzo's victory was the fourth in a row by Spanish riders in MotoGP, equaling the longest run of successive premier-class wins for Spain achieved by Alex Criville in his championship-winning season of 1999.
The Fiat Yamaha rider battled to hold off fellow Spaniard Pedrosa early on before establishing a clear lead by lap seven.
Behind him, Dovizioso and France's Randy De Puniet were vying for second place with Nicky Hayden pressing. Hayden and Spies, who started in seventh place, did well to move past De Puniet with three laps to go and Australian Casey Stoner also passed the French rider.
Hayden finally finished fourth and Stoner fifth, with De Puniet coming in sixth.
