Marquez run continues at Czech GP

Rookie Marc Marquez edged his Honda MotoGP teammate Dani Pedrosa to win the Czech Grand Prix yesterday for his fourth straight victory to stretch his lead in the overall standings.

The 20-year-old Spaniard covered 22 laps of the 5.403-kilometer Brno circuit in 42 minutes, 50.729 seconds to become the youngest rider to claim four consecutive races.

In his maiden MotoGP season, Marquez leads the standings with 213 points, followed by compatriot Pedrosa on 187. Another Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo is third with 169 with seven races to go.

Pedrosa, who won in Brno last year, was 0.313 seconds behind while Lorenzo finished third on a Yamaha, 2.277 behind Marquez.

“I enjoyed the victory but also the battle with Jorge, and also Dani was there,” said Marquez.

“So I’m very, very happy. Jorge and Yamaha were so strong here (and) Dani won last year. I didn’t expect a victory, I expected to finish on the podium,” he added.

Starting third on the grid, Marquez chased defending world champion Lorenzo until he made the decisive pass with seven laps to go and stayed ahead for his fifth victory of the season.

With the win in Brno, Marquez broke American Kenny Roberts’ single-season rookie record set in 1978.

Seven-time world champion Valentino Rossi of Italy finished in fourth place, 10.101 seconds off Marquez’s pace.

Britain’s Cal Crutchlow, the pole-sitter, crashed on lap eight. The Yamaha rider rejoined the race but earned no points as he only managed 17th spot.

Finland’s Mika Kallio won the Moto2 race for his first victory in this category while Briton Scott Redding retained his overall lead despite an eighth-place finish.

And Luis Salom of Spain widened his overall Moto3 lead after winning a last-lap thriller ahead of compatriot Maverick Vinales and Jonas Folger of Germany.
