Racer killed at Simoncelli event

Former Grand Prix motorcycle racer Doriano Romboni has died after being hit by another rider at a charity event in memory of the late Marco Simoncelli.

The incident occurred on Saturday during practice for the Sic Supermoto Day at the Latina Circuit near Rome. Romboni lost control of his bike and veered across the track where he was hit by Gianluca Vizziello. The 44-year-old rider was given a cardiac massage on the track and was immediately taken by air ambulance to the Santa Maria Goretti di Latina hospital, where he died three hours later. Romboni competed in the 500cc category in 1996-97 after winning six GPs in the 125 and 250cc classes. The event was to resume yesterday in support of Romboni’s family. He had three children.
