Bach welcomes US decision to bid for 2024 Games
INTERNATIONAL Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has welcomed the United States decision to bid for the 2024 Games and says whichever city is chosen will be a "very strong" contender.
The US Olympic Committee board voted on Tuesday in favor of a bid, but must still decide which city to put forward among four candidates — Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington.
Bach said: “A bid from the US would be very strong, regardless of which of the cities is finally chosen”, adding that “each of the four cities has its own very special appeal.”
The US hasn’t hosted the Summer Olympics since the Atlanta Games in 1996. New York and Chicago ran failed bids for the 2012 and 2016 Games, respectively. The Winter Games were in Salt Lake City in 2002.
Bach said US athletes “have a worldwide reputation” and “will be a huge asset for the bid”.
The USOC expects to make a final decision in January.
Los Angeles is considered the front-runner among the four US finalists, having hosted the 1932 and 1984 Olympics. Boston, San Francisco and Washington would be first-time hosts.
The official decision to bid for the Olympics comes just a day after Italy announced Rome would spearhead what is expected to be a multi-city bid.
Germany has said that Berlin or Hamburg will be put forward for the 2024 or 2028 Summer Games. Istanbul, Doha, Baku, Budapest, Paris and an African city are among others who could potentially bid. Cities have until next September to put in a bid, with a decision on the 2024 host to be made in mid-2017.
