China edges Slovakia 3-1 to finish in 7th place
WANG Linuo scored twice to give China a 3-1 win over Slovakia on Monday, securing a seventh-place finish in the Olympic women's hockey tournament.
Sun Rui overcame a nagging headache, an assortment of aches and pains - and the frustration of coming off four straight losses - to score the go-ahead goal in China's win to avoid going winless at the Vancouver Games.
"I wanted to play very well, but I can't," she said. "I think I was grumpy."
Sun didn't look at all unhappy or sore after she scored to put China ahead 2-1 with under 15 minutes left.
With a burst of speed along the left boards, Sun avoided Anna Dzurnakova's check and circled around the net. Coming out the other side, Sun skidded to a stop and whistled a shot over Zuzana Tomcikova. "We were bound to win this game," Sun said. "I was very excited."
Petra Pravlikova scored for Slovakia, which lost all five of its games to finish in last place in its Olympics debut. It was a disappointing finish for a Slovakian team seeking a feel-good ending after opening the tournament by enduring an 18-0 drubbing to Canada.
Wang finished the tournament with a team-leading three goals. She said the Chinese didn't spend eight years between the Olympics only to come away winless.
"We wanted to play the last game and enjoy hockey," Wang said. "Lots of us today had good feelings, so that's why we played very good hockey."
