China's Curling Coach Rips Into Team After Loss To Struggling Russia

CHINA'S women's curling coach ripped into the team after the loss to struggling Russia on Monday, saying the world champions lacked passion and that his days with the squad were numbered.

China went down 4-7 to the Russians, who are near the bottom of the pack, one day after handing Canada its first loss of the Olympics. China's record stands at 5-3.

"I'm furious," the team's Canadian coach, Dan Rafael, told reporters.

Rafael said he aims to keep coaching curling after the Olympics, but pressed on if he would do so for China, he said: "Probably not."

His contract runs until June 2010.

Rafael blasted the players, led by skip Wang Bingyu, for being inconsistent and not taking his directions to heart. He said they were treating the Olympic competition as if it was just another job.

"This is the national team," he said. "It's been together for six or seven years and most of the players have been on the team for that long and take it for granted."

China is still in third place and in the running to make the semifinals, which starts later this week.
