China's flag-bearer at welcome ceremony

BASKETBALL star Yi Jianlian, who has been confirmed as China's flag-bearer at the London Olympics opening ceremony, was among more than 50 Team China athletes and officials who attended a welcoming ceremony yesterday.

Yi told reporters he was "honored and grateful" to be given the opportunity to carry the flag.

Making its first official appearance as a member of the London Olympics family, the Chinese sports delegation joined several other nations in the traditional welcome and flag-raising ceremony inside the Games Village in east London.

Tessa Jowell, the village deputy mayor, said the ceremony set a tone that would continue throughout the London Games.

The welcome is open-hearted and captures something that is very special about British culture, Jowell said.

"In the Olympic Village our role is to make sure every athlete is supported, looked after, and nurtured to do their very best."

In the traditional exchange of gifts, Liu Peng, chef de mission of the Chinese Olympic delegation, presented Jowell with a large blue-and-white porcelain plate.
