German biathlete tests positive
The first doping case hit the Sochi Olympics on a day when the United States and Canada were set to renew their rivalry in men’s hockey.
An unnamed German biathlete tested positive for a stimulant, a German ski federation official said yesterday.
The official said both of the athlete’s samples tested on Thursday and yesterday came back as positive for a stimulant. “We know who is it but we cannot give a name,” the federation’s Stefan Schwarzbach said.
“As far as I know it is a stimulant that you sometimes find in extra nutrition (nutritional supplements). So, no EPO or things like that.”
Earlier, the German Olympic Committee said it had been informed by the International Olympic Committee on Thursday evening that a team member had failed a test and a disciplinary commission would convene later in the day after the athlete’s B sample was tested.
The athlete, whose name is expected to be announced by the IOC, now faces a possible suspension.
The US and Canada, both unbeaten at Sochi, awaited a rematch of the 2010 and 2002 gold-medal games that Canada won. Top-seeded Sweden edged Finland 2-1 in the other semifinal, a rematch of the 2006 Turin Games final won by the Swedes.
Marielle Thompson of Canada won the gold in women’s skicross, edging teammate Kelsey Serwa. It was Canada’s second gold-silver finish in a freestyle skiing event during the games.
On Day 15 at the Olympics, medals also were being awarded in Alpine skiing, biathlon, curling, and short track speedskating.
Canada’s other 1-2 finish in freestyle skiing came during the Games’ opening weekend, when sisters Justine and Chloe Dufour-Lapointe dominated moguls. In the skicross final, Thompson took an early lead and never let up. Ophelie David of France crashed about two-thirds down the course, giving the bronze to Swede Anna Holmlund.
