Japan main stadium plan
JAPAN has adopted a new basic plan for its main stadium for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games that would replace the costly original design that had to be scrapped.
The plan, adopted yesterday by a government panel, says the main stadium will have a roof over the spectators’ seats. It said the stadium will be ready by the spring of 2020, in time for the Olympics. Last month, Japan threw out an earlier design plan amid a public outcry over the 252 billion yen (US$2 billion) price tag, which was nearly double the original estimate and would have made it the most expensive sports stadium ever. Cost estimates will be set in a later plan to be released later this month or early September.
