Japan says Tokyo may drop 2020 bid
THE Japanese Olympic Committee says Tokyo will consider dropping its bid to host the 2020 summer Olympics after the South Korean city of Pyeongchang was awarded the 2018 winter games.
The International Olympic Committee was considered unlikely to hold both 2018 and 2020 games in Asia, so yesterday's success by Pyeongchang is expected to diminish the chances of Tokyo making a successful bid.
Japan's committee president Tsunekazu Takeda told Kyodo news agency "we should go ahead if an Asian city still has good chances for 2020 but we may not if we can't picture ourselves winning after thorough examinations."
The cutoff for a bid for 2020 is September 1. So far, only Rome has formally announced it will bid.
