Norway leads as Sochi enters home stretch

Norway held its lead at the top of the medals table yesterday as the Sochi Olympics entered the final weekend.
The Norwegian women revived their cross-country skiing dominance in Russia on a day when the Games were hit by a third doping case.
Marit Bjoergen won her sixth career gold medal yesterday by leading a Norwegian sweep in the women’s 30-kilometer cross-country race. A week ago, Norway’s heavily favored women’s relay team finished a disappointing fifth.
Vic Wild of Russia captured his second gold of the games by winning the Olympic debut of men’s parallel slalom snowboarding. Julia Dujmovits of Austria won the women’s race.
The Ukraine National Olympic Committee said yesterday that cross-country skier Marina Lisogor had failed a doping test, a day after a German and Italian athlete were thrown out of Sochi for taking banned substances.
On another day of glorious sunshine, Norway’s “Iron Lady” Bjoergen signed off with her third gold of the Games, matching her haul in Vancouver.
Therese Johaug took silver and Kristin Stoermer Steira, both Norwegians, claimed bronze in a rare clean sweep.
Compatriot Ole Einar Bjoerndalen, the 40-year-old whose 13 Olympic medals make him the most decorated Winter Games athlete, hoped to extend that record in the biathlon relay.
The American-born Wild, who became a Russian citizen in 2011 after marrying Russian snowboarder Alena Zavarzina, won gold in parallel giant slalom earlier this week. Zan Kosir of Slovenia took silver behind Wild, and Karl Benjamin of Austria won bronze. In the women’s parallel slalom, Dujmovits edged Anke Karstens of Germany at the finish. Amelie Kober of Germany won bronze.
With 91 of the 98 Sochi events completed, Norway sits atop the overall medals table with 11 golds, one ahead of Russia and two ahead of Canada and the United States.
