Schild retires

Swiss skier Martina Schild, who collected silver in the downhill at the 2006 Turin Olympics, has decided to retire due to injury, the Swiss ski federation announced yesterday. The 31-year-old bows out having missed all of last season with a dislocated hernia. Schild takes leave of the slopes with three World Cup podium finishes to her name, her lone victory coming in the super-G at Lake Louise in 2007. At the Turin Games, she sprang a surprise when beating Austrian favorite Michaela Dorfmeister in the downhill. Schild is the grand-daughter of Hedy Kaufmann-Schlunegger, winner of the inaugural women’s downhill gold medal at the 1948 Olympics staged in St Moritz.
