Swiss women rally to net hockey bronze

Switzerland won its first medal in women’s ice hockey after rallying from 0-2 down to beat Sweden 4-3 win in a frenetic bronze medal game at the Sochi Olympics yesterday.

Trailing 0-2 going into the final period, Switzerland came to life with goals from Sara Benz, Phoebe Stanz, Jessica Lutz and an empty netter from Alina Muller.

Sweden, the 2006 silver medalist, had looked comfortably on course for the win as it controlled the first two periods.

Switzerland fought back and with under seven minutes left and the game tied, the Swedes could not clear their zone and the Swiss made them pay as Lutz sent a perfect pass from Lara Stalder flying into the net.

Sweden pulled its goalie, opening the door for Muller’s fourth, and though the Swedes got one back with the extra attacker in the final minute, the Swiss held on and celebrated wildly on the whistle.

After finishing last in its group during the preliminary round, Switzerland went on to beat Russia in the quarterfinals before losing in the semifinals to Canada.

Since women’s ice hockey was introduced to the Olympics in 1998, Canada, the United States, Sweden and Finland had shared all the medals and the two north American hockey superpowers were to fight it out for gold again later in the day.

Elsewhere, Britain won the bronze medal in women’s Olympic curling by beating Switzerland 6-5 yesterday, ensuring the country will at least match its record haul of four medals at a single Winter Games.

British skip Eve Muirhead secured victory with a draw to the button on the last stone, partially making up for the world champion’s disappointing loss to Canada in the semifinals on Wednesday.

“The Olympic medal was the one medal we have been missing,” Muirhead said, “and for me to win with three or four of my best friends is so special.”

Canada was playing Sweden in the gold-medal game later.
