Vancouver stadium to get new roof after Olympics
THE stadium hosting the opening and closing ceremonies of next year's Winter Olympics will get a roof worth about a half billion dollars after the games.
A retractable roof for the 60,000-seat BC Place Stadium is planned for 2011.
It will replace the current air-supported dome. The CFL's B.C. Lions play there.
The roof is planned be the largest cable-supported, fully retractable fabric roof in the world at more than 10 acres (four hectares).
British Columbia Minister of Tourism, Culture and Arts Kevin Krueger said yesterday the project will not interfere with the Olympics ceremonies.
The design allows for the roof to retract, and be hidden inside a suspended, four-sided electronic video board without compromising sightlines.
