AL Baxter scored his first Super rugby try in his 100th match for the New South Wales Waratahs to help his team thrash the Cheetahs 40-17 and soar to the top of the standings yesterday.
The 33-year-old Wallaby prop took the ball in a ruck on the try line shortly after halftime and emerged from a pile of bodies with his team's third of five tries on a rainy evening at Sydney Football Stadium.
"I don't care how it happens, as long as you get one it's fine," a grinning Baxter said in a televised interview.
Fullback Kurtley Beale ensured the Waratahs took a bonus point by intercepting a pass and sprinting over the line for his team's fourth try a few minutes later.
Josh Holmes came off the bench to chip in for a fifth in-between two late tries by the Cheetahs.
Prop W. P. Nel and replacement Corne Uys added respectability to the Cheetah's scoreline but the South Africans were comprehensively outplayed from the start.
The Waratahs are level with defending champions Bulls from South Africa with 28 points each, but lead on points differential. The Bulls lost their first match of the season after six straight wins when they were defeated 17-32 by the Auckland Blues earlier.
Also, the Waikato Chiefs scored two tries in a 12-minute second-half spell to beat the Otago Highlanders 27-21 at Mount Maunganui and keep their semifinal hopes alive.
The win was Waikato's first at home this season, snapping a series of three losses, and gave it a 4-3 record.
In Auckland, Isaia Toeava and Joe Rokocoko scored tries and flyhalf Stephen Brett kicked 22 points for the Blues, who ended the Bulls' 12-match win streak.
The Pretoria-based team has not beaten the Blues in Auckland in 14 years, won only four of 32 matches in New Zealand and lost the chance to equal the Canterbury Crusaders' record of 13 straight Super rugby wins.
