Boks confirm Smit as WCup captain
SOUTH Africa coach Peter de Villiers has retained John Smit as Springboks captain for the 2011 season.
De Villiers said yesterday in a South African Rugby Union statement that Smit, who has played 102 tests, will skipper the team in the Tri-Nations and lead South Africa's World Cup title defense in New Zealand. Lock Victor Matfield will continue as vice captain. The 33-year-old Smit is under pressure for his place in the Boks team, and is not the No. 1 hooker for his provincial side this season. But de Villiers has kept faith with Smit, who captained South Africa to glory at the 2007 World Cup alongside the 33-year-old Matfield, saying, "they are hugely respected in world rugby and have a massive influence on the teams in which they play."
