Brumbies, Reds notch Super wins

ACT Brumbies scored two second-half tries and Wallabies flyhalf Matt Giteau kicked three conversions and a penalty in a 24-13 win over South Africa's Lions in Super 14 rugby on Friday.

ACT improved to 3-1 on the season while it was the fourth straight loss for the Lions.

In Hamilton, New Zealand, Queensland fullback Luke Morahan scored a match-winning try as the Reds fought back from 15 points down to beat the Waikato Chiefs 23-18.

The injury-ravaged Reds trailed 0-15 inside the first 20 minutes and also had winger Brando Va'aulu sin-binned for a dangerous tackle but fought back to beat the heavily-favored Chiefs, who had won their first three games away from home.

In Canberra, the Brumbies led 10-3 at halftime, dominating on a rainy night but failed to capitalize until five minutes from the break when they were awarded a penalty try after repeated scrum infringements by the Lions.

The Lions went into the match with eight changes, including an all-new front row, and struggled in the scrum. Lions tighthead prop Kevin Buys was sent to the bin in the 27th minute after the visiting side was penalized numerous times for hitting too early in the scrum.

The Brumbies got off to a poor start with Giteau kicking the ball out on the full twice in the first two minutes, first from the kickoff and then from a penalty one minute later.

The Lions were first to score with Burton Francis converting a penalty in the ninth after the Brumbies were ruled offside while defending their line. Giteau then leveled the scores through a penalty five meters inside the Lions' half in the 15th.

In Auckland, Chiefs wingers Sitiveni Sivivatu and Lelia Masaga and loosehead prop Sona Taumalolo scored tries, though Stephen Donald missed all three conversions, to give their side a 15-0 lead.

The Reds, however, inspired by Wallaby scrumhalf Will Genia, refused to roll over and responded with a try from winger Will Chambers in the 27th, which was converted by Cooper.

Donald finally landed a successful kick after Va'aulu was sin-binned for a dangerous tackle on Sivivatu in the 33rd before Queensland's Cooper scored two penalties to drag his side back to 18-13 at the break. Cooper cut the gap further with his third successful penalty.
