Carter's mark as Crusaders win

FLYHALF Daniel Carter became the highest New Zealand points scorer in Super rugby as the Canterbury Crusaders beat the Waikato Chiefs 26-19 in a Super 14 match in Hamilton yesterday.

Carter slotted four penalties and two conversions to move to 996 points and past former Crusaders teammate Andrew Mehrtens (990) into second place on the career points list.

ACT Brumbies center Stirling Mortlock (1019) was the first player to move past 1,000 Super rugby points earlier this season. The Brumbies play the Sharks in Canberra today.

"I had no idea. I guess it's a good milestone and if I get the next opportunity to (break 1,000 points) in the next week or two that will be good," Carter said in a televised interview.

"But I think that's something you look back on at the end of your career."

In Sydney, winger Drew Mitchell scored four tries as the New South Wales Waratahs celebrated captain Phil Waugh's record-breaking appearance with a 73-12 victory over the Lions yesterday.

Waugh made his 119th appearance for New South Wales, passing former scrumhalf Chris Whitaker's previous mark of 118 matches.

Mitchell also became the first New South Wales player to score four tries in a Super rugby game, while the Waratahs scored their most points in a match and exceeded their largest winning margin in the competition.

The Waratahs, who led 33-5 with a bonus point at halftime, improved to 3-2 while the South African side lost its fifth in a row.

In Hamilton, Crusaders scrumhalf Kahn Fotuali'i scored two first half tries, while Carter added three penalties and converted both tries for the visitors.

Richard Kahui scored a try for the Chiefs and flyhalf Stephen Donald slotted three penalties and a conversion for the home side, which went in to the break trailing 16-23.

The second half began in torrential rain before Carter added his fourth penalty to give the visitors a 10-point lead. Donald added his fourth penalty with seven minutes left, though neither side was able to add to its score as the rain swept back in.
