Chiefs, Bulls win easily to remain on top
DEFENDING champions the Chiefs and South Africa's Bulls picked up where they left off as Super Rugby resumed after a three-week break for June test matches, winning 18th-round matches to remain clearly atop their regional conferences.
The Hamilton-based Chiefs and Pretoria-based Bulls both won for the 11th time in 14 matches and both collected four-try bonus points to occupy the top two places on the championship ladder as Australian teams remained inactive because of the tour by the British and Irish Lions.
The Chiefs beat the Wellington-based Hurricanes 34-22 on Friday in their first match since May 24, retaining a 10-point lead in the New Zealand conference, while the Bulls beat the Port Elizabeth-based Southern Kings 48-18 to move 13 points clear of the Cheetahs in South Africa.
The Bulls cannot be displaced from the top spot in the South African conference after the Cape Town-based Stormers upset the Bloemfontein-based Cheetahs 28-3, severely denting the Cheetahs' playoff hopes.
Seven-time champions the Crusaders are still a faint threat to the Chiefs' first place in New Zealand, scoring a last-minute try to secure a bonus point from a 40-12 win over the Highlanders in Dunedin yesterday.
The Chiefs and Christchurch-based Crusaders will meet next Friday and decide the New Zealand conference. To top the table, the Crusaders need a maximum 10 points from their last two regular season matches, against the Chiefs and Hurricanes, and also require the Chiefs to take no points from Friday's match and their last against the Auckland-based Blues.
The Blues' playoffs hopes crumbled when they conceded a last-minute try to lose 20-22 to the Durban-based Sharks yesterday. The loss left the Blues in eighth place, two points behind the sixth-placed Cheetahs who are clinging to the last playoffs place.
