Chiefs storm past Stormers

Defending champions the Waikato Chiefs continued their unbeaten start to the Super Rugby season yesterday with a 36-20 win over the Cape Town-based Stormers in Hamilton.

Center Tom Marshall, making his debut with the Chiefs, and winger James Lowe both scored tries for the Chiefs, who won their third straight.

All Blacks scrumhalf Tawera Kerr-Barlow scored an early second-half try to give the Chiefs a 24-6 lead before the Stormers rallied to 24-20 with second-half tries by fullback Gio Aplon and replacement Nizaam Carr.

The Chiefs then reasserted control with late tries by Tevita Koliamatangi and flanker Tanerau Latimer, playing in his 100th Super Rugby game.

Stormers captain Jean de Villiers also played his 100th Super Rugby match, but couldn’t prevent his team from losing its second straight game in New Zealand and falling to 1-3.

In Melbourne, All Blacks flyhalf Tom Taylor kicked six penalties and hooker Ben Funnell scored the only try for the Canterbury Crusaders as the New Zealand side labored past the Melbourne Rebels 25-19.

The seven-time champions Crusaders led 12-9 at halftime, all penalties, and the Rebels scored their only try with two minutes remaining through flanker Scott Fuglistaller, giving them a bonus point for losing by fewer than seven points.
