Chiefs to defend title against Brumbies

The Chiefs will defend their Super Rugby title against the ACT Brumbies after both teams defied underdog status on Saturday to win tension-packed semifinals.

The Hamilton-based Chiefs will host next Saturday’s final after coming from behind to beat seven-time champions the Crusaders 20-19 in a match in which the Crusaders started as overwhelming favorites.

The Brumbies, under former Springboks coach Jake White, overcame even greater odds to snatch a 26-23 win over the Pretoria-based Bulls with a 79th minute try on the Bulls’ home ground at Pretoria.

Saturday’s final will now see the match-up thought least likely ahead of the semifinals: the New Zealand champion Chiefs attempting to retain their title against the Australian champion Brumbies who won the most-recent of their two Super Rugby crowns in 2004.

The Crusaders have not captured the Super Rugby title since 2008, when current coach Todd Blackadder took over from Robbie Deans.

Under Blackadder the Crusaders have reached the semifinals four times and the final, once losing in 2011 to the Queensland Reds, but their failure to go further again this season now places Blackadder’s future in doubt.

The Bulls won the title in 2007, 2009 and 2010, reaching the semifinals this year for the first time since their last championship victory. They weren’t expected, at the start of the season, to become the strongest team in the South African conference, instead were seen to be rebuilding after the loss of a number of senior players.
