Crusaders beat Waratahs in key clash
ALL Blacks flyhalf Daniel Carter kicked five penalties to steer the Canterbury Crusaders to a 20-13 win over the New South Wales Waratahs in a top-of-the-table Super 14 clash in Christchurch, New Zealand, yesterday.
Crusaders halfback Kahn Fotuali'i and Waratahs center Rob Horne scored the only tries of a dour match which featured little flair or imagination in attack.
The Waratahs started the weekend's ninth round in first place but conceded that placing to South Africa's Bulls, who beat the Waikato Chiefs 19-33 on Friday. The Waratahs dropped to third.
Canterbury's win was in the balance until the 76th minute when Fotuali'i, who had earlier spent 10 minutes in the sin-bin for a dangerous tackle on Waratahs center Berrick Barnes, scored his try.
Fotuali'i carried the ball over the goal line from a ruck in the right-hand corner and his try was awarded after reference to the video referee. Replays suggested the Crusaders halfback wasn't fully in control of the ball when he grounded it among a heap of forwards.
Carter landed five from nine attempts to guide the Crusaders home in one of the most important confrontation of the season so far between top-placed teams.
"We ground it out, got points at crucial times and played at the right end of the field, which is what you have to do in matches like that," Canterbury captain Richie McCaw said. "It puts us in a good position but let's be honest we are facing some pretty tough teams from now on, so it will get pretty serious from now on in."
Elsewhere, the ACT Brumbies remained in contention for the semifinals with a 61-15 demolition of a woeful Cheetahs side in Canberra.
The home side scored nine tries, while flyhalf Matt Giteau slotted six conversions for 12 points before he was replaced with 20 minutes remaining.
The Brumbies moved into fifth place in the table with 26 points, two behind the Stormers. Fullback Julian Huxley added two conversions after Giteau went off.
Also, the Stormers of South Africa galloped to an early lead then scrambled in defense and held their nerve to beat the Auckland Blues 33-21 in Auckland while Ryan Cross and Cameron Shepherd each scored two tries to give Australia's Western Force a 41-27 win over the Otago Highlanders in Queenstown.
