Crusaders bite Cheetahs on return to home comfort
ALL Blacks flyhalf Dan Carter played his first match since an injury wrecked his Rugby World Cup campaign as the Canterbury Crusaders christened a new home ground with a 28-21 win over South Africa's Cheetahs in the Super 15 yesterday.
Carter took the field as a halftime replacement in his first match since October 1, when he sustained a serious groin strain that ended his World Cup before the playoffs rounds.
By making his comeback yesterday, he was able to take part in a victory which celebrated the Crusaders' first match in their home town of Christchurch in 22 months - an exile forced by the February 22, 2011, earthquake that caused the deaths of 185 people.
The Crusaders played at a new 17-500 seat stadium constructed to replace their former home ground, AMI Stadium, which was wrecked by last year's earthquake.
The Cheetahs came close to spoiling the Crusaders' homecoming party when they rallied from 3-11 down at halftime and 8-18 after 46 minutes to tie it at 21-21 with 10 minutes left.
The Crusaders needed a 75th-minute try to All Blacks fullback Israel Dagg to clinch the match and only their second win from four games this season.
Backs Sean Maitland and Robbie Fruean scored earlier tries for the Crusaders.
Flyhalf Johan Geeson and center Robert Ebersohn scored tries for the Cheetahs.
Elsewhere yesterday, the ACT Brumbies brought a shuddering halt to the Otago Highlanders' perfect start to the season with a shock 33-26 victory over the New Zealanders in Canberra while winger Tom Kingston scored with five minutes left to give the New South Wales Waratahs a 34-30 win over South Africa's Sharks in Sydney.
