Crusaders revive playoffs hopes with Blues victory
THE Canterbury Crusaders scored tries in the opening minutes of both halves on their way to a 29-15 win over the Auckland Blues yesterday which breathed life into their playoffs hopes in Super Rugby.
Scrumhalf Mitchell Drummond scored in the first minute as the Christchurch-based Crusaders snatched a lead they never relinquished against their fellow New Zealanders, staving off the threat of a third-straight home defeat. The seven-time champions dashed to an early 14-0 lead before the Blues closed to 17-10 by halftime. Tom Taylor’s try in the opening minute of the second half reopened their 14-point margin, helping to ensure their fifth win in 10 games and finally snuffing out the Blues’ faint playoff chances.
Later defending champions the New South Wales Waratahs beat the Melbourne Rebels 18-16 in a tight, rain-soaked all-Australia match in Sydney.
